| REVIEW |
| INDUSTRIAL NIGHTMARE:
A short, dark maze connects the ticketing area to the queue line that's
housed in a newly remodeled horror movie museum featuring.authentic recreations
and realistic likenesses of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees,
Frankenstein,
etc. Admissione to Industrial Nightmare is gained through intimidating
double doors that introduce a brand new gargoyle entrapment, complimented
by auspicious sounds and an immediate surprise! A previously hidden escape
route is soon revealed that leads past some leftover radioactive barrels,
mad scientist's laboratory, then another new room highlighted by an abrupt
bed levitation scene. Narrowing hallways lead to some bathroom humor
and some built in surprises that soon take a disgusting turn for the worse!
In the bowels of the facility resides an enormous, animated Impaler-like
monster guarding the entrance to 2007's SURPRISE OF THE YEAR - the
Industrial
Nightmare swamp, where "water" rises up to your neck, and creatures
attack as you're bounced from side to side by the force of the "waves!"
Exiting the quagmire brings about an authentic reconstruction of Halloween,
occupied by
Michael Myers who unleashes an attack from inside a
legitimate looking wood cabin, followed by another new scene showcasing
a sudden bedroom surprise. Claustrophobic hallways, lasers,
sparks, and various other assaults introduce a confrontation with the ax
wielding Jason Voorhees that yields to a hideous troll room, decorated
with a horrific looking skull fountain spewing forth some sort of obnoxious
green liquid, that hides a surprise finish to Industrial Nightmare.
Analysis:
LENGTH - 7½, 13 mins.
ACTORS - 9½, Aggressiveness and energy levels
of Haunted Network performers are unmatched! Gargoyle and
fiend with sparking machete are memorable. However, it’s a large
facility, and there were only 14 total characters. Live actor in
the water by the swamp monster is sorely missed. Supplementing
the cast would raise the score.
SCARINESS - 9½, Unexpected happenings are everywhere
and décor leaves no stone unturned. Meticulous detailing of
horror film reenactments make them look like precise replicas from the
films themselves. Characters too look as though they stepped directly
off the set. Astronomical surprises go without saying, and the rabid
cast will tear you to shreds! Assaulting nature of the soundtrack
is a huge bonus, and surprise finish really boosts the score.
DESIGN - 9½, Several new rooms, scenes and surprises
have arrived for 2009. Swamp scene is as impressive as ever
and showcases ingenuity not seen elsewhere in the industry. Soundtrack
and lighting are outstanding. The course itself is a bit on the short
side, and the Industrial Nightmare theme no longers holds true,
so re-naming the attraction would prove beneficial.
PROPS - 10, Lots of animated mechanical scares with the
swamp scene remaining the most memorable.
VALUE - 10, $17 includes Dementions as an
added bonus. That's two first-rate attractions for less than $20!
Take advantage of the combo ticket, or coupon whenever possible and save
even more!
RATING: 9½, Numerous surprises you're
unlikely to experience anyplace else. The combo ticket easily provides
an hour or two of seasonal entertainment. You owe it to yourselves
to experience one of the best haunted attractions around! |
| DEMENTIONS:
Clowns
and red-eyed skeletons decorate the walls upon entering
Dementions,
and lead the way into a terrifying elevator entrapment that places you
in the middle of some sort of psychotic SAW-like “game” orchestrated
by the Jigsaw Killer, Pigface! As the treacherous plot
unfolds, deadly nerve gas fills the chamber, prior to its plunging "downward"
in an intensified, music blaring, prolonged engagement that persists until
the doors finally open sending you into "The Ring of Fire" - a fast
spinning vortex. Maniacal happenings continue when walls close in
from both sides, ceilings come crashing down, and a claustrophobic passage
proves to be the only escape, if you can call it that considering what
lies ahead are encounters with a twisted Butcher hanging his unfortunate
victim’s carved up remains from meat hooks, and an abominable, blood soaked
Christmas scene that finds Rudolph having been massacred, and his
stuffed head hanging as a trophy above the fireplace! Demonic
pentagrams, cemeteries, a mausoleum body drawer surprise, wicked
clowns, a sexy bathtub scene, tortures and executions all deliver their
own brands of demented horrors, building to a multiple chain-saw
chase out assault that awakens a 17 foot tall Scissor Serpent towards
the exit of Dementions!
Analysis::
LENGTH - 7, 12 minutes.
ACTORS - 9+, A little slow at the beginning, but great
intensity and uniqueness from Saw on. Chainsaw madmen are
so relentless it seems as though there's a dozen or so of 'em! Need
to add to the cast size to raise the score. Total Characters = 14.
SCARINESS - 9+, Scenes are appallingly fearsome, in a
sick, demented way. Accompanying soundtrack is loud, and perfectly
compliments the various abominations.
DESIGN - 9+, Fresh, new scenes have been incorporated
with Saw elevator entrapment remaining the most memorable. Demented
theme holds throughout. Christmas scene is somewhat less sinister
this year due to the replacement of chainsaw Santa with more of a fun-loving,
mentally deranged killer thus rendering the scene a little less effective.
The course's duration serves as its major weakness.
PROPS - 9+, A good mix of static and mechanical props.
Elevator Saw scene and collapsing ceiling are standouts.
VALUE - 10, Included free of charge with paid admission
to Industrial Nightmare.
RATING: 9, Great compliment to the Industrial
Nightmare complex. Very aptly named, as the horrors presented
here are, in a word demented. What more would you expect from
the twisted minds of The Haunted Network? |
| PITCH
BLACK (includes CAGE MAZE): As the
name implies, Pitch Black is a totally dark maze featuring numerous
loops and dead ends, combined with random encounters with an assortment
of invisible creatures! Located in the basement of the Industrial
Nightmare complex, a mysterious entrance descends into the depths of
the facility. Emotions spiral to near fever pitch, as you wander
around aimlessly in the darkness. On rare occasions, faint glimpses
of light serve as the only contact with the outside world, but they're
few and far between. All there is to do is feel your way along while
monsters serve up unexpected startles - always without warning, and you
never know the location of their origin, or where they might lead.
Nervousness sets in almost immediately, then increases in intensity, and
finally soars to near panic levels the longer you're lost in the maze,
and God forbid you become separated from your group! The futility
of your efforts are compounded by shock walls (2006 surprise of the year)
and misdirecting ghouls telling you to first go one way, then the other.
Eventually progressing to the one and only exit of
Pitch Black leads
directly into Cage Maze, a fog-filled, fence entanglement, similarly
consisting of a multitude of loops and dead ends. The confusion is
worsened by distracting characters climbing on the fences, and taunting
your misfortune. Bumping into other lost souls, along with your own
emotional unrest makes successful navigation practically impossible .
Maybe the monsters are right. Perhaps you won't ever make it out
of Cage Maze - alive!
Analysis:
LENGTH - 9+, Completed the course in 23 minutes, but
could easily take longer depending on the degree of difficulty experienced
while navigating the mazes.
ACTORS - 8, Not the ferocious hysteria typically associated
with other Haunted Network attractions, especially in Pitch Black
where characters provide subtle, unnerving, often whispered misguidance
consistent with the haunt's emotional duress induced by the exploitation
of one's innermost fears. Those present in Cage Maze
could stand to step it up a notch in order to better contribute to the
confusing nature of the entrapment.
SCARINESS - 9+, The environment places individuals in
surroundings that allow one's own emotions to provide the majority of the
scares. Characters, mazes, and sounds just help them along.
DESIGN - 9, Frustrating loops and dead ends lead to a
lone escape route from Pitch Black that immediately dumps you into
the continued confusion of Cage Maze, the latter of which becomes
increasingly difficult in proportion to fog density. Pitch Black's
loss of '07's moving hallway is disappointing. Mist unexpectedly
spraying out ot the darkness is also absent this season, course appears
uunchanged in comparison to a year ago, and there are no new surprises.
In their defense, significant flooding occurred with August's torrential
rains necessitating major clean-up and restoration that unquestionably
took up valuable time that might have otherwise been used for updating
and expansion. Adding a mirror maze to the labyrinth would certainly
fit the theme and might be a clever attribute.
PROPS - N/A, They're mazes, thus contain no props by
design.
VALUE - 8, No price increase, but still rather expensive
at $15. The combo ticket is the only way to go.
RATING: 8½, Pitch Black w/Cage
Maze promotes total assault on the senses by pushing your emotional
stability far past comfortable limits. The introduction of some new and
shocking surprises would easily return this haunt to the list of elete
attractions, typically ranked at 9 and above. Include it in
your visit to Industrial. |
