ANALYSIS:
"The
mother of all haunts" gets underway through majestic double doors, and
across a narrow bridge that traverses a cesspool of neon green seepage
spilling down from above. An immediate path-blocking altercation
yields through a previously barricaded, dungeon-like door that swings open
on its own encouraging progression onto scenes of limitless horror including
a murderous torture chamber of dismembered human appendages, a blood-soaked
autopsy room, vile medical exams, a deadly morgue of body vaults, and so
on. Deafening sounds, spiked walls, and loud pounding, guide progression
into the clutches of stark raving mad lunatics that lick blood off of decapitated
heads, and force passersby to kneel, crawl, and otherwise pay homage to
their domain of atrocities. Enraged monsters attack as the route
dives into a murky swamp, and forges its way through claustrophobic passages
only to be met and tormented by half-human Pigs! Vicious acts
of agony and suffering continue to mount through a freezer of preserved
body bags into a CGI surprise, then past erupting sparks, grotesque lab
experiments that utilize monkeys as test subjects, and some sort of ungodly
ceremony until escape is eventually achieved through a fog-filled, siren-sounding
Silient
Hill-like fence maze.
Nobody does it like Industrial
Nightmare! Did you hear that? NOBODY! This place
is a masterpiece in every sense of the word! Sounds are horrific
and loud - audio enhancement in the séance
room makes your skin crawl, and elsewhere music sometimes morphs as initial
moments of ever so brief tranquility give way to utter chaos, like the
calm before the storm! Connection zones are appropriately adorned
with a variety of vacuum form panels. Costuming is unique, and characters
are soaked in blood, agitated in disposition, and even involve customers
in the scares by forcing them to oink like pigs, and do other unimaginable
things before permitting them to proceed. Monsters attack out of
the swamp water, and within the claustrophobic "marsh" itself, and "Silent
Hill" nurses stalk the maze. Impressive props include swamp monster,
gushing water, red-eyed actor-tronic beast, CGI's, etc. The
attraction is limited only by its duration, and the fact that very few
changes were justified from a design standpoint this year, as explained
below.
Sadly, this is the final season
of this attraction's 4-haunt home, Industrial Terrorplex. The building's
been sold, and 2015 marks your last chance to visit this amazing attraction
that's dominated multi-venue Haunt of the Year Awards for nearly the last
decade. Let's hope a building and location can be acquired so this
legendary attraction can live on other than as a memory. One visit
is all it takes to see why Industrial Terrorplex is known as America's
Scariest Haunted House! |

ANALYSIS:
Dementions
begins through a corridor of hanged clowns, then crosses a wooden
sway bridge enabling the attack of a hideous-looking Stalk-about Troll.
Eluding the grasp of his elongated arms, the course takes advantage of
converging walls and claustrophobic passageways to introduce a series of
demented
scares that include a spooky cemetery featuring a mechanical skeleton bursting
through previously closed shutters; a snowy, blood-soaked
Christmas
spoof starring a slenderized Santa, and the triumphant return of
Wacko
Jacko, who bursts out of hiding to the tune of Michael Jackson's
I'm
Bad and Beat It waving a pair of underpants he attributes to
the nearby corpse of Subway's Jared, then refocuses his attention
on passing groups. Other twisted sights consist of an
evil bunny overseeing an electric chair execution, a medical mishap
highlighted by a Humanoids From The Deep claw-like invasion
of a disemboweled cadaver, and a lethal torture chamber of shackles, chains,
mutilations, and an inverted cross that provokes vengeance from a blasphemous
chainsaw assassin that reignites the interest of not-so-jolly
St. Nick
for the annual obligatory chainsaw chase-out of Dementions.
Troll, claustrophobia, converging
walls, and graveyard surprise are appreciated, and excellent sounds and
lighting continue to set appropriate moods. Haunted Network
style morph is present in the torture chamber, where slower, suspenseful
music perfectly sets up the emergence of the scene's villain, who remains
hidden, and doesn't make his presence known until he's cued by the soundtrack,
at which time he commandeers the scene, and all Hell breaks loose.
On the down side, this particular haunt has suffered since its 3 sister
attractions received major overhauls a few seasons ago, and this being
the final year for Terrorplex (at least at this location) doesn't
help its cause, as last year's shortcomings weren't addressed. Shower
was unoccupied and surprise was missing, surgeon is AWOL, and chainsaw
chase-out pales in comparison to The Black Blessing. Cast
size in general isn't populated enough to adequately staff all the scenes.
Santa,
bunny,
blasphemous
chainsaw assassin, and the return of Wacko Jacko are positives,
and a few minor tweaks have taken place here and there, but for the most
part Dementions has been neglected now for far too long. |

ANALYSIS:
Infected
begins
with an immediate encounter of authoritative figure barking out instructions
over a megaphone while an emergency news broadcast reports the outbreak
of an unknown viral infection that's, "returning the dead to life."
A sudden break in an overhead pipe leaks a contaminated mist, and progression
into a detection area confirms suspicions that everyone in the group is
now testing positive for the ambiguous disease. Lights fail upon
release into a nearby transport elevator that thrashes and shakes about
before restoration exposes the presence of a contemptible, drooling,
infected Gimp that has somehow made his way into the confinement,
touching, violating, terrorizing, biting, and defiling, everyone in sight
in the most disgusting and horrific ways imaginable! Eventual escape
leads the route across an unstable sway-bridge, to a restricted area that
houses advance stage sufferers of the treacherous epidemic. Perseverance
beyond skeleton-lined walls and claustrophobic passages elicits various
skirmishes with zombie-like antagonists including a terrifying altercation
with lady clutching onto a deceased newborn singing a distortedly wicked
version of Hush Little Baby; a space-invading run-in with a mutant,
red-eyed beast; a visit to The Sticky Floor Gentleman's Club; and
an infinite zombie hallway that evokes the wrath of an undead walker
chase-out of Infected.
Lots of outstanding props are on display at Infected
including
virus detection screen, elevator, red-eyed monster, infinite zombie hallway,
gator gnawing on a human arm, living statues, CGI's, bridges, etc.
Accompanying soundtrack is once again loud and atrocious, morphs in the
elevator upon emergence of the burlap-sack masked Gimp, and gives
everybody the creeps with its distorted rendition of Hush Little Baby,
the latter of which is a much stronger scene because of its revised audio
enhancement. Character appearance is consistent with the centralized
theme, and while dialogue declines beyond the opening scene, zombies
don't
speak, so this isn't a major flaw. Gimp is the top performer
by a landslide, and the course is cleverly designed to exit into a holding
room at the entrance to CarnEvil. |

ANALYSIS:
CarnEvil
begins
in a colorfully painted room of doors that access a spinning vortex initiating
entrance into a world of fluorescently-painted walls and three dimensional
décor.
Honking horns and disorienting music accompany the adventure across rainbow
bridges; through "endless" portals; past drop-down wall panels; down a
slide; through a tilted hallway; and into a brief, multi-colored, skull-lined
wall entrapment that features a hidden door escape. Playful clowns
and Little People
terrorize the adventure playing with hula-hoops,
shooting confetti, zipping across overhead, blowing bubbles, making suggestive
remarks, and misdirecting groups along the wrong path, making them climb
on purple steps to avoid walking on the floor, and engaging them in various
games like locating a pink skull with green eyes among the hundreds of
differently hued designs. Red, green, blue, orange, yellow, purple,
and gold barrels and crates are everywhere, and 3-D glasses wreak havoc
with one's depth perception as a glowing-eyed monster asserts itself into
the path biting at passersby! Arrival at a pick-a-door segment magically
opens a previously concealed route that's guarded by gargoyles and a living
surprise just ahead of the antics of a clown on a swing, and the
eventual chainsaw chase-out of CarnEvil 3D.
As far as clown themed haunts go, this one boasts
more unique designs and paint schemes than its competitors, mandating navigation
through various circular portals, etc. But attractions of this nature
are always short and seldom scary without a cast of killers, or a plethora
of mechanical animatronics/actor-tronics. While CarnEvil 3D does
indeed house its very own monster, clown
demeanor remains playful.
Hats off to the clown with the high-pitched voice, who worked his
big red nose off to insure everyone had an enjoyable experience from start
to finish. He lured groups into the wrong tunnels, joked and conversed
with them throughout, and lengthened overall duration by engaging them
in various activities. While this venue is elaborately decorated
and detailed, its theme is doomed from the start, and best enjoyed as a
colorful funhouse, unique to the Louisville area, as opposed to
thinking of it as a more traditional haunted house. |

INDUSTRIAL TERRORPLEX
-
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: Terrorplex has dominated
the competition as Ohio Valley Haunts' multi-venue HAUNT OF THE YEAR season
after season, having earned that honor 7 times! Combo admission went
up a dollar, but $2 per ticket is being donated to New Hope Services. What
a shame it would be for this storied legacy to tragically end when the
doors are shut for good at the conclusion of the 2015 season. These
guys need to find a new home so the tradition of America's Scariest Haunted
House can live on.
OVH said it best years ago by stating "The Haunted
Network sets the standard by which all other attractions measured."
This still holds true today. Don't miss the opportunity to visit
Industrial
Terrorplex in its final season. You won't leave disappointed. |
